Chipboard fire retardant: what is that?
Chipboard fire-retardant is easy to process. Like MDF and OSB, it belongs to the family of fibreboards. Chipboard is structurally strong, lightweight, easy to assemble and does not warp. As more than three quarters of chipboard consists of residual wood, it is a durable product. Compared to MDF, the structure is coarser. This makes it more difficult to finish edges and corners than MDF. Furthermore, just like MDF, chipboard can be machined and lacquered in all kinds of shapes. However, it is necessary to prime chipboard first.
Fire-retardant chipboard is made from wood chips that are soaked in glue and pressed crosswise into a board in three layers. Fire-retardant chipboard has fire-retardant salts added during the production process. As a result, the board can withstand high heat, does not contribute to flame spread and develops approximately the same amount of smoke as solid wood. You can recognise the fire-retardant chipboard by the red colouring of the top layers. This makes the board a good choice for projects in dry indoor areas where fire safety is extra important. Think of public areas or other areas where many people come together.
Chipboard fire retardant is a constructional board. This means that this board material needs the necessary finishing before it can be used for visible work. Chipboard fire retardant is not resistant to moisture. It is therefore only suitable for indoor projects in dry areas. Chipboard fire retardant is, just like any other chipboard, not suitable for heavy constructional applications.

Machining of chipboard
Chipboard is good and easy to assemble or work with. When mounting the panel material, it is advisable to screw the screws to the rear or underside. That way, the screw holes are not visible. The fibres are held together by resin. Therefore, it is important to degrease the board properly before painting it. The material also sucks, which is why we recommend always finishing the edges with an edge sealer. For this reason, chipboard is only suitable for indoor applications and in dry conditions.
Are you going to paint chipboard? Then it is a good idea to countersink the screws and fill them with filler. Then sand and paint neatly in one go.
